In a small Village of Tamil Nadu, people lived a very simple life. The village had a deep-rooted pride and an undying love for Tamil language and culture. The elders spoke of ancient stories and the children learned to respect the land and their language. But this village was often overlooked by those in power, leaving its people feeling isolated and unrepresented. In this village lived a young boy named Velan. Though barely 12, he had a determination. Every morning, he would watch the sunrise from the distant mountains and thinks “What if I could be like that, What if I could bring light and hope to our village?” One afternoon, a few rich powerful men from the nearby town came to his Village. They mocked the villagers’ dialect, belittled their customs, and made them feel small and insignificant. Velan, watching all this from the side, wanted to rise and defend his people, but he knew he needed more than mere words to make a difference. That night, he went to his old and Wise grandmother, Appathaa, a storyteller in the village. Appathaa was known for her love for Tamil culture, Seeing his sad face, she asked, “What troubles you, child”? He replied, “Appathaa, why do those rich people from the big towns always look down on us? Why do they act as if our language and culture are less important?” Appathaa placed her hand on his shoulder and said, “Because they have forgotten what it means to respect others. But remember tamil has the power to rise, no matter who tries to suppress it” These words created a spark in his heart. From that day on, he dedicated himself to read and learn more about the tamil culture and history. He read poems and stories about Tamil heroes, and practiced speaking with conviction. He promised himself that one day, he would make the voices of his people heard. Years passed, and he grew into a young man with a voice that could capture crowds. He began writing powerful lines that spoke about the struggles of his people. As his influence grew, he didn’t stop at poetry. He worked to bring practical changes like building schools, providing access to clean water, and creating opportunities for the youth. His journey was never easy; he faced resistance and was judged. But he remembered Appathaa’s words. He believed in his roots, his language, and his people. And so, the boy who once watched the sunrise with longing to become a light for others, Muthuvel Karunanidhi alias Velan, started bringing hope to the people and is fondly called the sun from the south!
